Cool, Calm, and Collected: An Inspiration Gallery of Cool-Toned Kitchens

Cool, calm and collected–from soft greys and crisp whites to the raw elegance of concrete finishes, these kitchens are the picture of tranquillity and minimalist style. Limewash paint, with its subtle movement and chalky texture, is the perfect partner for this palette—bringing depth and nuance to neutral shades while maintaining an airy, light-filled feel that doesn't feel sterile or stark.

In this inspiration gallery, we’ve rounded up stunning examples of cool-toned kitchens from around the globe, each featuring Bauwerk Limewash Paint. Think sleek, minimalist spaces where crisp walls meet polished concrete floors, or monochromatic designs softened by natural light and textured finishes. Whether it’s the grand elegance of an East London townhouse kitchen or the striking simplicity of an open-plan Scandi-inspired space, these kitchens showcase the versatility of cooler tones in creating spaces that are as calming as they are contemporary.

Whether you’re planning a full renovation or simply seeking a fresh perspective for your kitchen, let these serene spaces spark your imagination.

Holiday House, is a symphony of greys—from the 'Silversky' limewashed walls to the stainless steel cabinets, concrete floors, stone counters and metal stairs. Yet, it’s far from cold, thanks to the way light picks up on the varied textures, lifting the space.

Greens are making a statement in kitchens lately, from bold cabinets to accents like a metro tile backsplash or a striking green stone waterfall island.
These are all paired with a light, cool-toned neutral, like 'Whitewash' or 'Tranquil', which have very low texture, depending on surface and light angles.

Kitchen Limewash Tips & Tricks

Bauwerk Limewash Paint can be applied to most wall and ceiling areas in a kitchen, just like conventional paint. However, we recommend avoiding areas exposed to grease, oils, and fats—like behind the stovetop. This is because, unlike conventional paint, limewash is breathable and helps regulate your indoor micro-climate by absorbing and releasing moisture. While this property is great for maintaining air quality, it can also make the paint susceptible to absorbing marks and stains, so it’s best suited for areas less prone to splashes.

If you want to carry your limewash colour to flow seamlessly throughout the space you can use a sheet of glass behind cooking areas to protect against marks while keeping things looking clean and cohesive. This also makes it easy to repaint later if you fancy a change. This sleek modern kitchen in The Loft Corlette in Australia makes use of this method. While the paint is 'Whitewash', it reflects hints of green from the kitchen island. The result is a perfectly complementary hue unique to that space. Alternatively, you can use a waterproof material like a stone or tile splashback in splash zones, with the remaining wall areas limewashed in one of Bauwerk’s nearly 400 colours to tie everything together beautifully.

If you prefer not to use tiles or a splashback but can embrace a gentle, lived-in look, limewash can be used in splash-prone areas around the sink or stove (as long as they’re not constantly wet). Keeping them looking fresh is simple: just repaint the wall as needed. If your walls are in good condition with no repairs, a fresh coat of limewash can be applied without prep, taking as little as 15 minutes. Be sure to paint the entire wall edge to edge to avoid noticeable lines. For walls that have been repaired, you’ll need to take extra steps for an even finish—learn more here.

Tip: If you’ve used a light colour such as Whitewash, Raw White or Chalk—you can patch by just repainting over the marked areas, instead of painting the entire wall. Bronwyn Riedel, co-founder of Bauwerk Colour, uses this method for her ‘Whitewash’ bathroom walls. Every few months she uses a sample pot to touch up spots and two minutes later, (seriously, we’ve timed it) the room is revived.
