BASA: a retail concept that explores the foundations and essentials for improved living.
While we've been absent from the brick-and-mortar scene for some time (our last location was in Perth, Australia), the stunning space of our official stockist, Basa, might just convince you otherwise. Stumble into this Singapore shop and you'll be right in the middle of a Bauwerk Colour haven. With a material-rich design, Basa's showroom showcases our products surrounded by the warmth of limewash, and the rugged charm of brick, with beautiful custom displays. This retail space is a fusion of a paint store and an Aesop boutique, with not a single paint splatter in sight.
Basa, meaning "foundation" in Spanish, is a collaborative endeavour by Ming Architects, Interior Design studio Pupil Office, and builder Reptileworks. This partnership explores the essential elements of elevated living, presenting a showroom that not only highlights Bauwerk Colour but also curates a selection of lifestyle products, including the renowned Aesop line.
Amy Lim, interior designer and founder of Pupil Office, has utilised limewash in numerous projects, including her own home. Speaking to Design Anthology, Lim highlights the appeal of limewash paint, noting, ‘I love the raw texture, the uniqueness of the finish, the properties and the variety of colours. Depending on the lighting conditions and surroundings, each colour can be perceived very differently, meaning that no two spaces would ever look the same even when using the same colour.’
Located in a neighbourhood of famously vibrant and candy-coloured shopfronts of Joo Chiat, Basa's retail space offers a more subdued approach to colour, exuding sophistication and elegance.
Olive green limewash paint creates a soulful patterned backdrop to the cherry wood displays, terracotta tiles, and travertine accents. ‘The colours and materials were specifically selected for their tactility, depth and richness. We intend to change up the colour scheme over time to keep the store design fresh,’ architect, Cher Ming Tan, founder of Ming Architects told Design Anthology.
Meanwhile, our sweet little limewash sample pots, natural wooden limewash brushes, and iconic dark grey containers are elevated into boutique-worthy displays, providing an inspiring backdrop for discussions and project planning. In addition to creating a space to gather and discover, Basa also offers painting and decorating for business, residential, renovation and commercial spaces. Inspiration will certainly be abundant in this space...
